Living well with dementia

Can someone living with dementia stay at home?

All About Home Care provides specialist dementia care at home across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Maidstone. Our carers are trained in-house by Jo Allchin, a qualified Dementia Trainer, with training designed in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society.

Often, staying at home can be the best option with the right support, in familiar surroundings and close to the people you love. Around 944,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, and with cases projected to reach 1.7 million by 2040, the need for compassionate, specialist care has never been greater.

Dementia covers a range of conditions. The four most common are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia, and each needs a different approach to care.

At All About Home Care, dementia care is one of our deepest specialisms.

Our expertise

Trained by a qualified Dementia Trainer

Our Sevenoaks Field Care Supervisor, Jo Allchin, is a qualified Dementia Trainer. She trains our whole team in communication, adapting care as conditions progress, and supporting families. Jo was named Community Homecare Worker of the Year at the Kent Care Awards 2025.

Nationwide, only 38% of care staff who provide direct care have completed dementia care training, according to the CQC’s State of Care 2025/26 report (using Skills for Care data). At All About Home Care, 100% of our care team receive dementia training, delivered in-house.

For family carers

For many people living with dementia, their main carer is a partner or close family member, and that can lead to exhaustion. Our home care offers immediate respite, whether for a few hours or a few days.

How we help

Care that steps inside your loved one’s world

By stepping inside our client’s world, we provide truly person-centred dementia care. In practice, this means:

Consistent carers

The same familiar faces at every visit. In dementia care, familiarity isn’t a luxury; it’s essential.

Routine

Visits at the same time each day, following the same pattern. Predictability reduces anxiety and confusion.

Communication

Clear, simple language, eye contact, and time to respond.

Cognitive engagement and outings

Conversation, activities and hobbies that keep the mind active, with Dementia Friendly Community events, Forget Me Not Cafés and outings they enjoy.

Personal care, with dignity

Bathing, dressing, personal hygiene and meals, always with patience, without rushing and without judgement.

Safety and wellbeing

Quiet attention to safety, meals and hydration at home, and noticing changes early so families and health professionals are kept informed.

Types of in-home dementia care

Support that changes as needs change

Personal care

Help with daily activities including bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, with the patience and sensitivity that dementia care needs.

Companionship care

Emotional support, conversation, hobbies and activities, and company at community events.

Specialist dementia care

Tailored care plans including cognitive engagement, medication management and specialist approaches to maintain wellbeing.

In the community

Connected, not isolated

Our carers go with clients to local dementia groups, sharing in the moments of connection, and often volunteer to help make them welcoming for everyone.
